When you’re about to add an electric motor to your bike (follow our tutorial here), it’s important to consider several factors. First, you need to examine the geometry and size of your bike frame to determine whether the motor can be mounted. It’s essential that bikes with carbon frames have aluminum bottom brackets to prevent the motor from damaging the carbon.

If the diameter of your bottom bracket shell is too small or too large, it may limit your ability to install the motor. Please note that we also offer an adapter for Pressfit bottom brackets with a diameter of 41 mm and a length of 86 or 92 mm (PF 86 or PF 92).

Next, you need to check whether your bike has enough space to accommodate the battery. If your bike is small, this can be a challenge, but there are workarounds, such as battery bags or batteries mounted on the rear rack.

Finally, it’s important to check the condition of your transmission and brakes to see if they’re capable of handling the addition of an electric motor. If your transmission isn’t in good condition, it may not be able to handle the motor’s additional power (we discuss this here), and if your brakes aren’t powerful enough, it could lead to safety issues.

Taking all these factors into account may seem like a hassle, but it can help you have a more enjoyable and safer riding experience on your e-bike.

In summary, you will need to check the following points:

  • The bottom bracket is not made of carbon.
  • Check the geometry and size of your bike frame to determine whether the motor can be mounted.
  • Check to see if your bike has enough space to accommodate the battery.
  • Check the condition of your transmission and brakes to see if they are suitable for adding an electric motor.
Electric motor with a 10-mm shaft

As you can see, for the TSDZ8, there is a larger gap between the motor shaft (which is inserted into your bike’s bottom bracket) and the motor’s lower housing/mount. This gap can accommodate up to 10 mm. A 10-mm gap is generally sufficient to route cables under the bottom bracket on aluminum, steel, and titanium frames, but most carbon bikes have a shell or wall that is too thick around the bottom bracket for a TSDZ8 to be compatible. It is essential that bikes with carbon frames be equipped with aluminum bottom brackets to prevent any risk of the motor damaging the carbon.

In some cases (particularly with fat bikes), the chainstays (the rear part of the frame leading to the derailleur hanger) may curve at a sharp angle from the bottom bracket, usually to accommodate a very wide tire (such as a fatbike), and the motor (regardless of the model) may then touch the frame at that point. In this case, you’ll need to use the spacers provided with the kit. However, if the rear chainstay is too flared, this will prevent you from fully inserting the motor into the bottom bracket. On each product page for the kits, you can download the motor template TSDZ8 to check before placing your order.

Electric Bike Battery Installation Guide with Technical Specifications
Install your battery with ease using our versatile mounting solutions. Several configurations are available to fit your electric bike.

In addition, the frame tubes must allow for the installation of the battery:

  • The available length for the battery

  • The diameter of the down tube for mounting the battery

  • The shape of the down tube for mounting the battery

For a typical Dutch-style bike (such as the ELOPS 520 from Decathlon), it is best to mount the battery on the seat tube. In this case, the seat tube must be long enough to accommodate the battery. It is important to verify that the battery can be installed comfortably without affecting the rider’s comfort.

By taking these dimensions into account, you’ll be able to safely install your electric motor kit on your bike and fully enjoy your e-bike riding experience.
